A few years ago, the minister of music at my church sang a chorus that resonated with me. It was a song that used the words of Desmond Tutu. Whenever a tragedy appeared in the world, these words sprung up to calm my spirit.
“Goodness is stronger than evil.
Love is stronger than hate.
Light is stronger than darkness.
Life is stronger than death.
Victory is ours through Him who loved us.”
Desmond Tutu
This is a wonderful message to remember today, on the anniversary of such a dark day. In the days following September 11, we stood together as a nation. We remembered to be kind to strangers. We treated each other like we are all children of God. We showed that goodness was stronger than evil.
We don’t need a national tragedy to remember the humanity of another person. We can cross the aisle and be with those who we disagree with. We can practice patience. We can share goodness, love, and light with others.
We can remember Desmond Tutu’s words: “Goodness is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Light is stronger than darkness. Life is stronger than hate.” Choose kindness.
