Last week, during chapel for the Grace Weekday students, I talked about how the cross is a sign of God’s love for us as I gave them cross stickers. At the end of chapel, after I reminded them what the cross stood for, one of the students pointed out the big cross behind me. Then we started pointing out others together. They had been in the chapel many times before that day, but they may not have noticed or known what the crosses meant. Once they understood them, they were able to see them everywhere.
We are an Easter people, so it’s easy to look at life through the lens of the Resurrection and ignore our own selfishness and sin. Lent gives us a time to stop and pay attention to our own faults, and to all of the times we choose something else over God. It also gives us a way to pay attention to the crosses, or all the ways that God shows love to us.
