Mary's Message: Spent

UPDATE FROM NOVEMBER 19, 2020
Thankful for Digital Opportunities

I am so excited to be starting a book study this week! We will be reading Adam Hamilton’s Incarnation. There is still time to purchase your book (and we will still take you if you know you don’t have time to read but you want to join us anyway.) Our study will begin on Sunday, November 22 at 5pm on Zoom. You can join us at this link: https://zoom.us/j/92926220415 or with the code: 929 2622 0415. The password is “advent” for the study. The study focuses on Jesus, and the mystery that is God made flesh. This will be a great study, and you can laugh at me as I try to figure out how to share videos over zoom! This study will continue through December 20th.

We are having a church-wide, family friendly Sunday school starting at 9:45am on November 29th. Our theme is Do Not Be Afraid, and we will read scripture together and answer a few simple questions in addition to our fellowship time together. This is a product of Illustrated Ministry, so if you are inclined to color, there are options to color a picture each week. Coloring can be stress relieving during this time, so it might help with your holiday and 2020 stress. You can join us for Sunday School here: https://zoom.us/j/97706617423 or with the code: 977 0661 7423. Our password is also “advent.”

If you have been with us for the past few years, you know that we usually have an auction in the fall. Since we are unable to have one in the usual way this year, we are instead offering our items online: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0549aaa92ba2fb6-grace. You can check out that link, or look at the slideshow on Facebook, to see the items offered for the auction. All you have to do is comment on an item you want to purchase, send in your funds for the item, and you will be contacted about receiving it.

Even though this year looks different for the holidays, I am thankful to have opportunities to spend time with you digitally. Thank you for taking part in our new experiment!

Don’t forget about our upcoming Advent opportunities. Sunday, November 22, begins our first new book study since the pandemic started. We will be reading Adam Hamilton’s Incarnation, which is also our source material for our Advent sermon series. We will be reading a week ahead of the sermons, and your contributions may their way into what we preach the following Sunday. This is a good study for anyone looking to learn more about Jesus, or to talk through things like the pandemic and the election. Please purchase the book ahead of time. Here is the Amazon link: https://smile.amazon.com/Incarnation-Rediscovering-Significance-Adam-Hamilton/dp/1791005543/ or Cokesbury link: https://www.cokesbury.com/Incarnation-1-2. (It’s on sale right now at Cokesbury!)

Church-wide Sunday school will start Sunday, November 29 at 9:45am, and run until when church starts. This is an all church study and can be done by adults and children. The curriculum, Do Not Be Afraid, is by Illustrated Ministry, so have your crayons ready in case you want some stress relief through coloring.

We are also planning to special worship opportunities in December. On Sunday, December 13, we will be having a special Service of Hope and Healing. If you find yourself blue this Christmas season, please join us for this service as we move from despair into hope. On Sunday, December 20, we will have our Lessons and Carols Live Stream! Even though this year is different, we can still celebrate the season with beautiful music and scripture.

Our Family Christmas Service will be online only this year due to Covid-19. This allows us to have easier planning since we won’t be worried about whether we will have to shift online or not. Children and families are welcome to join us in this new adventure! We will be recording parts at home on our devices and sending them to the church. Then we will plug everything together for a service with an amusing script that will still have a bit of chaos included because there are children involved. Even if you don’t have a child in the play, I encourage you to watch it with your family as you celebrate Christmas.

I am excited to share some of our Advent plans with you! Starting Sunday, November 22, at 5pm, we will have a book study via Zoom! The study is Adam Hamilton’s latest book, Incarnation. It is very timely because he wrote it with the election in mind, knowing it would be a contentious one, and also with all the changes that Covid-19 have brought to us. The study goes through the names of Jesus, such as Messiah, Emmanuel, and many others. This is a great intro book for anyone new to the faith. This study will run through December 20. I encourage you to purchase a book ahead of time, and you can find the book at your favorite book retailer.

Our other Advent plan is a church-wide Sunday school hour! We will start on Sunday, November 29 at 9:45am, and run until when church starts. This will be on Zoom, so you can attend from wherever you are, and it is family friendly, so everyone can be involved. We will be using Illustrated Ministry’s Do Not Be Afraid Advent study. Each week, we will read part of the Christmas story and ask and answer questions with each other. There is a coloring component to the curriculum, so you will be able to color if you find that relaxing! This should be a fun chance to see people that we don’t always get to see.

Advent is a time of preparation, when we remember the hope, peace, joy, and love that Jesus brings. I am looking forward to Advent this year.
