Profession of Faith | Jesus Christ My Lord and Savior

If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10:9-10

To move in this direction is to embrace promises from scripture regarding God’s grace, and to pray a prayer of commitment to the Lord.

Grace of God
is for all people from the noblest do-gooder, to the most wretched sinner. . .even for me. (John 3:16)

Recognize & Repent of sin.
We have not loved God with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors. Our sin creates a great divide between us and our Creator. Though God’s love reaches us right where we are, He doesn’t want us to stay that way. (Romans 3:9-26; 6:15-18)

Accept God’s forgiveness. The cross of Jesus Christ bridges the gap between our failure and God’s Grace. Accept that God loves you so much that in the midst of your sin, He died for you. (Romans 8:14-16, 31-39)

Confess Christ as Lord & Savior. Once we understand God’s grace, let us commit our lives to Him. (Romans 10:9) When you are ready, speak the prayer below from your heart to God.

Enter into discipleship. This prayer is one point on our collective journey of discipleship. We are called to join with other followers of Christ to regularly worship, meet in a small group and serve in ministry or mission. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14,4-8)

God, You are good, and I put my trust in You. You sent Your one and only Son Jesus to show the way and then die on a cross for me, to rescue me from my sin. I believe. I trust that in Your great mercy my past has been wiped clean, every wrong forgiven—and through the power of the resurrection You will free me for joyful obedience! I invite Your Holy Spirit to be my helper and counselor. I pray that You would gather Christian community around me to be encouragers and motivators. And help me become Your hands and feet to others. Equip me with the gifts and inspiration to do Your work. Connect me with people in need and ways to meet that need. I surrender my life for Your purpose and plan Lord God. It’s in the mighty name of Jesus Christ

The Confession of Faith of the Evangelical United Brethren Church is one of three established Doctrinal Standards of the United Methodist Church, along with the Articles of Religion and the Standard Sermons of John Wesley.

The United Methodist Church adopted the Confession of Faith in 1968 when the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church.

The Confession of Faith covers much of the same ground as the Articles of Religion, but it is shorter and the language is more contemporary. The Confession of Faith also contains an article on the Judgment and Future State (derived from the Augsburg Confession) which had not been present in the Methodist Articles of Religion.

The Articles of Religion are an official doctrinal statement of American Methodism. John Wesley abridged for the American Methodists the Thirty-Nine Articles of Anglicanism, removing the Calvinistic parts among others. The Articles were adopted at a conference in 1784 and are found in paragraph 103 of the United Methodist Church Book of Discipline. They have remained relatively unchanged since 1808 (save for a few additional articles added in later years).
