A Message from Mary: Investing in the Young

Last year I signed my child up for VBS at a friend’s church. This particular friend knows me as a Christian Educator. You may see where this story is going. I got the text one day that I wasn’t surprised to receive, “Will you be in charge of crafts for VBS?” My eventual answer was yes, and I went into planning mode for crafts. Her VBS wound up being “small”, around 30 kids or so. It was the first time they did an evening VBS, and while some complained about the time change, she saw lots of benefits. She had more volunteers, and the families of the children were able to hang out at the church and converse with one another. Several families stayed connected with the church months after VBS, and that was not something she could say for the really big, daytime Vacation Bible Schools where parents dropped their children off as an activity.
Vacation Bible School matters. It can be a gateway for families into our church, but the most important thing is that we are investing in the lives of the children that attend. They may learn what love is through a volunteer who cares for them. They may learn a song that sticks with them during difficult times. I hope above all else that they learn that God loves them, no matter what.
Our evening Vacation Bible School includes dinner at 5:30 for the family, and check-in and opening assembly starts at 6 pm in the sanctuary. Then the children will break into groups and go To Mars and Beyond through crafts, storytelling, games, and science. We need volunteers who can cook, one to be the voice of our robot EP-320 (named for the theme verse, Ephesians 3:20), people to be shepherds and lead children to their rotations, and people to be in charge of areas. If you can help with a little before or during Vacation Bible School, which is June 9-13, from 5:30-7:30 pm, go here to register to volunteer:
For Mother’s Day, we will have a little brunch in the fellowship hall, during Sunday school, called “Muffins with Mom.” It will be a light breakfast with a craft to do with your mother. Children and moms, or those who are like moms to you, of all ages are welcome.
