A Message From Mary: Your Lenten Journey

On Sunday, I related the scripture, “Here is your son. Here is your mother,” to Jesus calling us to take care of others, especially those who are in great need. One of the ways that the children are taking care of others is through their weekly offering to Heifer International. This year, they have taken home a calendar that has a daily exercise, like add a quarter for each jar of honey you have in your house, or a nickel per pair of shoes, and a weekly stretch challenge. This week’s challenge is to give up your allowance to help others. Not a portion. Not get your parents to give you extra, but the whole thing. This is a call to sacrifice. It was interesting to see the sheer look of panic on a few of the children’s faces, but it is a reminder that sometimes following Jesus can cost us everything.
Over the weekend, several volunteers served at our Mission Grace house and helped clean out the house and also begin to gut the interiors. We heeded the call to care for others.
There are a few ways to care for the youngest in our midst over the next few weeks. Our next Messy Church, which is Holy Week and Easter themed, is Wednesday, April 3, from 5:30-7pm. We would love volunteers to help with crafts or helping with dinner. Messy Church is a lot of fun, and it is a wonderful way to engage children in the discipleship process. Another way to volunteer will be our Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 13, from 10am-12noon. We will need volunteers to help with games, crafts, and hiding the eggs. And we of course need Easter Eggs filled with non chocolate candy.
Lent is a time of sacrifice, but it is also a time for self reflection. This Saturday, we are offering a Painting with a Twist class to do a cross painting. The cost is $35, which covers the materials and the instructor’s time. This night may have more fellowship than introspection, but it might be something different to try during Lent. Closer to Easter, we will also be hosting a Labyrinth for prayer and introspection in the fellowship hall.
However you continue your Lenten journey, through prayer, introspection, or self sacrifice, I hope that it draws you closer to God.
