Collin's Weekly Column: Let The Children Come

Greetings all in the name of Christ!
This week is teacher appreciation week, and our church has been heavily involved in showing teachers of all kinds how valuable their work is.  On Tuesday, our own teachers at Grace Weekday School were treated to a special lunch provided by the Parent Council.  Also, in furthering our support of Burrus Elementary in Independence Heights, we provided special treats for the teachers there.  This fall, we will be providing that school with backpacks and school supplies, too.  I hope that you’ll find a way to show the teachers in your life how much you appreciate them, too!
This week in worship, we will continue our series how we can, “Love like Jesus.”  As I outlined on Sunday, there were many times that Jesus expended vast recourses of energy and time (including intentionally traveling through countries otherwise avoided) just to seek out one person.  From our perspective where efficiency and profit are often kings of our daily existence, we might be tempted to tell Jesus that his actions were foolish, or perhaps not worth his time.  But to that one, it makes all the difference.  Luckily, Jesus will often leave the ninety-nine to find the one, and this Sunday we will continue learning about when Jesus reached out to those shunned by others by hearing the story of when Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.”  This is important because while our culture values children, that was not necessarily the case in the 1st century.  In Jesus’s time, children were not necessarily regarded as special or particularly endearing to anyone but their own parents.  The Disciples no doubt thought that the children attempting to see Jesus would just be a hindrance.  But Jesus rebuked them by saying not only were children welcome but that the very Kingdom of Heaven belonged to them!  Strong words from our savior, but ones we should take to heart.  Are there those around us to whom the Kingdom of Heaven belongs but that we most often ignore?
See you this Sunday in the ALL ARE WELCOME place.
