About Us

Offering grace to the Heights for over a hundred years.

Since 1905, Grace Methodist has offered a place to experience Christ, form meaningful relationships, and transform through faith.  We are a multi-generational community focused on living as a family and serving alongside our neighbors to see the historic Heights neighborhood continue to thrive.

Our Story

Grace began in 1905 with the meeting of several women who formed the Home Missionary Society of Houston Heights. The Rev. Stephen McKinney served as the first pastor of Heights Methodist Episcopal Church, south, as it came to be called. Worship services were held in a variety of locations until the congregation erected a permanent sanctuary at the corner of 13th and Yale in 1906. A larger building, constructed in 1911-12, served the congregation until 1971. Renamed Grace Methodist in 1950, the current sanctuary opened in 1971 and officially shifted the address to 1245 Heights Blvd.

Ministry and worship have taken many forms over Grace's storied history.  Today, we continue to serve our neighborhood with a food pantry, multiple recovery groups, opportunities to relax and celebrate, and an ongoing commitment to share the Good News that God loves you, God desires good for you, and no one is alone.

Your First Visit to Grace

It is never easy to enter a new place.  Grace may not be large, but it is 5 buildings and 2 parking lots constructed in a time long before 21st-century space planning.  We get it. But visiting Grace doesn't have to be scary.

Our whole community worships on Sunday at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary facing Heights Blvd. There is a small lot on Heights next to the Sanctuary, and a larger one on Yale with two entrances between 12th and 13th street.  The 40 Metro Bus stops right across the street from Grace and we offer bike racks for those who'd like to use the Heights trails to get here.

The Offices of Grace are open Monday- Thrusday.  Appointments (even short notice ones) are best since we are scattered throughout the property.  The Weekday School is open Monday-Friday from 7:00 am- 6:00 pm and has an entrance in the parking lot on Yale.  The Food Pantry is in a small building in the Yale parking lot.  (Google 1230 Yale and you'll get there).
