A Message from Mary: Investing in Schools

This week is known as “Teacher Appreciation Week” across the nation, so parents have most likely scrambled to come up with a few ideas on how to honor the person that spends so much time with their children. The parent council of Grace Weekday hosted a luncheon for the teachers of the day school on Tuesday, and I was able to help out with that. In the middle of helping, I received an email from our adopted school, Burrus Elementary, asking if we could help out with a goody bag for teacher appreciation for Thursday. It was last minute, but a member of the Family Ministries Council helped me put together little goody bags that we labeled “Teacher Survival Kits.”
My very busy Tuesday concluded with my first Parents Teacher’s Organization meeting at the upcoming elementary school that my daughter will attend next year. I was surprised to see that I was only one of seven that attended that night. The low attendance may be attributed to the end of the school year,  lack of communication, or even lack of time on the parents part. I don't know how engaged parents are at this school until next year, but since it might be low, it reminds me that this is where we, the church, can step in and mind the gap.
Burrus Elementary turned to us first to ask for help because we have established a relationship with the school. I read once a month to the kindergarten and first-grade students, and the church has provided backpacks, school supplies, Christmas presents, and cookies for the teachers. For schools with busy working parents, the church can step into volunteer to read with students, teach gardening, or even attend field trips. When we invest time and resources to local schools, we make a difference in the lives of young people.
