Collin's Weekly Column: The Sharper Side of Jesus

Greetings all in the name of Christ!
This week, we hit the midpoint of our brief sermon series on the sharper side of Jesus.  Jesus was a kind and loving man who spent his life doing what he could to make things right for those that were often looked past or ignored.  And he calls us to do the very same thing!  But, as you have likely noticed in your own faith journey, doing the right thing for the downtrodden often is accompanied by a certain amount of frustration.  It is not at all easy.  As we spoke last week, Jesus was fully human and that means that he experienced all that it means to be a human – including frustration at not being able to do things the way he thought they ought to be done.
This week, we turn to a particularly strange passage found in Luke 12 where Jesus, who elsewhere in scripture is called the Prince of Peace, tells thousands of people around him that he, in fact, did NOT come to bring peace.  Instead, Jesus tells us that he came to bring division.  Not only that, but he gives us specific examples of exactly who will be divided: brother against brother, father against son, mother against daughter, etc.  Those few words paint a very different picture of the gospel.  What exactly does Christ mean?  Why would he say such inflammatory things?  Ultimately, the answer is a difficult one but it is one that we will attempt to ask and answer this week in worship.  I hope that you can make it!
See you this week in the WHY DID HE SAY THAT place!
In Christ,
